Sifting through the Pages – Reasons to feed that Bookworm in you…

Now I could be biased simply because for as long as I can remember, more often than not, you’d find me in a library over a basketball course. I wasn’t a nerd in the typical sense of the word, but books provided somewhat of a solace to a mind I didn’t know I needed it. As I grew up, short stories were replaced by novels and Charles Dickens was joined by Oscar Wilde and Amish Tripathi. But my book collection isn’t the only thing that increased, the reasons for adding to it increased too. So here I am, sharing some of them with you, in the hopes that a couple of netflix series will be substituted with ink on paper.

A better grasp of language:

Let’s start with the most basic reason that has been drilled into our minds by educators and others alike. And not without reason, I might add. Reading books, just like listening and communicating in a particular language greatly aids in smoothening out the creases in your skill. The more you read, the better you understand why things are the way they are.

Adding substance to conversation:

Being well read adds a certain amount of confidence to your personality. Consciously or subconsciously you gain a lot of knowledge. A little bit of this and a little bit of that, and before you know it, your conversations become more enriched. You’re also never out of topics to talk about and that’s usually a plus!

Your travel wish list:

You know how they say that if you read, you can travel anywhere in the world through a book? Well, I do like to travel in real as well , so I’ll take it a step further. For me books are like a map of places through the author’s eyes. It makes me yearn to travel to some places and even discard others. It’s always great to have things to look forward to on your trips instead of blankly walking into an unknown place – although that might work out well sometimes too!

Being alive in a different time:

Pick up a classic and you’ll see yourself looking at the world through the eyes of someone who was alive half a century before you! You will echo their thoughts and feelings, see the colors they saw and the life they lived. In a world flipping out so much over vintage things and experiences, it doesn’t get more authentic than this!

A Much Needed Escape: Now this just may be the Pisces in me talking. But whenever things get stressful, I turn to a book. I have done this for as long as i can remember. It’s like meditation for me. So when I feel like the world and my mind is out of control and there’s just chaos around, I pick up a book and read. That requires focus and attention. It’s like deep breathing. It does not make the problem go away, just gives me time to pull my shit together, step back and give it another go with a clear head. This is one of the most important reasons for me to read.

I mean you could always watch another series, but nothing beats hanging on to the words of a story, picturing yourself in it, immersing yourself in the experience while your fingers caress the pages and moments seem to stop and slip away at the same time.
